Cycling throughout the UK has taken a significant rise in recent years and a lot of this is due to the benefits cycling offers. With an increase in traffic in our major cities and towns matched by an ever-growing need to avoid long queues and congestion comes the cycling revolution. For some it is the environmental impact that weighs heavily on our conscience and so motivates us to hit the pedals and for others it is the health benefits from rising early and getting the blood pumping that gets us on the saddle; but there is another key benefit for taking two wheels rather than four and that is the financial benefit… it costs nothing to cycle to work!!
1.Cycling increases fitness and weight loss
A great way to get fit without stressing your joints, especially if you’re knew to fitness and carrying a little extra weight. Cycling offers no-impact exercise on you joints, boosts your blood circulation and increases metabolism; therefore burning a ton of calories and offers all over body toning.
2.Cycling keeps you healthy
It has been proven that cycling regularly can half your risk of heart disease and keeping fit on a bicycle keeps your immune system strong enough to ward off infection. It also improves bowel movement and increases intestinal strength. The increased blood circulation also feeds the brain with a fresh flow of oxygen and nutrients, essential for building knew brain cells, improving your memory by up-to 15%.
3.Cycling improves insomnia & reduces stress
Regular cycling has been proven to increase your over-all evening rest. Because cycling is an outdoor activity, you’re exposed to daylight which improves your circadian rhythm and helps rid your body of the stress hormone cortisol which hinders a full-night sleep and eliminates that sluggish feeling.
4.Anyone can cycle
Age and injury can be the reasons you can no-longer continue with many sports. Weight-lifting is one of them and running another; these sports bring with them great limitations when you pick-up an injury or as you get older, it simply gets harder. Cycling has no limits. It doesn’t matter what age or what your physical or mental limits are, cycling is a lifelong sport that anyone can do.
5.Cycling saves time
Time is something we never get back and I for one couldn’t think of anything worse than sitting in traffic on the daily commute to work. Due to an increase in cycling lanes, it is becoming easier and quicker to get around the towns and cities in which we work. If you don’t live within an easy cycling distance of work, you could always get transport to the outskirts of the town and cycle into your work from primary transport hubs. You will literally plough past the stationary traffic and cut the time it takes to get there by half and just think, you haven’t polluted the air with more engine fumes!!
6.Explore by bike
There is simply no better way to get to know our towns, cities and countryside than by bike. To be able to get up-close and personal with what our beautiful country has to offer, whether it be getting down narrow country tracks to access secluded coves or stop-off at a street-side café for a well-deserved rest without thinking of where you can park; your bike will get you to where you want to be easily, conveniently and hassle-free!
